GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS AND PLAYERS
CONSIDERING COMPETITIVE BASEBALL (AAA or AA)
PLAYERS:
*HIGHER LEVEL OF COMPETITION
– most of these players have been playing together for quite some time.
Experience is higher!
AAA – most of these teams have 4 or 5 great players.
AA – most of these teams have 2 or 3 really good players.
*PLAYING TIME
– expect that playing time will be limited.
At least expect that you will have to compete for a position as well as playing time.
Not guaranteed!
You need to be prepared for “bench time”, if you are not in the top 9 players on the team.
At the AA level
all of your players on your roster at that game are to bat. Your playing time will most likely be determined on your level of dedication and improvement.
You will start to develop and play more in a certain “area” of position, as opposed to playing “everywhere”.
At the AAA level
you “may or may not” get into the game.
(It depends on the philosophy of your coach.) A lot of coaches tend to develop the players in league play, but in tournaments the top 9 will get most of the playing time.
You could spend a significant amount of time sitting while you are learning.
*PRACTICE TIME
– you need to be prepared for a much greater “time commitment”.
Practices will be at least two to three times per week, with more at the AAA level, based on your team’s needs and the coaches’ demands.
*PERSONAL COMMITMENT
– how much “WORK” are you willing to put into this?
Are you prepared to practice things away from team practices?
Meaning, are you ready to dedicate your personal time to getting better?
It will mean more dedication to yourself as well as the team.
PARENTS:
*TIME COMMITMENT
–
The AAA level
plays from January through July and may include Fall Baseball – especially if you are working towards a State Title.
Practices are usually during the winter as well.
You can count on tournaments all most every weekend through July.
Again it depends on the coach and the team. The League games are through the Ft. Collins League, so travel is of a greater demand.
The AA level plays from about March 1st through July.
Practice about 2 to 3 times per week, depending on the team and coach.
Tournaments are usually every other weekend!
Expect your coach to request that your vacation be either put on hold until after the season is over, or at the least that you commit to the team “when” you will be gone (in advance) so they can prepare ahead of time.
*FINANCIAL
– You can expect a significant increase in the cost for your player.
Most times it depends on the “sponsorships” that a team has secured.
But they will most likely do many fund raisers.
AAA
– costs per family starts at about $750 (does not include registration or uniform costs) usually it is about 30% more than the cost at AA.
Depending on how many tournaments you do.
In AAA, a lot of teams are starting to do “out of state tournaments as well.
Again, costs rise with this!
AA – costs per family start at about $500 (does not include registration, uniform costs, or State Tournament cost).
Again this all depends on the philosophy of the team and the coach and what they want to achieve.
It depends on how many tournaments the coach wants to do.
With more tournaments, comes more expense.
Most of these tournaments are in the Front Range, and closer to home.
*FUND RASING
– most teams will do some sort of fund raising, and you are expected to be at these to do your part in raising monies for your team.
Most teams do several of these prior to the season.
*PLAYING TIME FOR YOUR PLAYER
– a far cry from the “everyone plays” expectations of REC ball.
It will depend on the amount of work your player puts into it both at practice and at home.
Teams vary in their philosophies on this for both AAA and AA.
PLAYING TIME IS NOT GUARANTEED!
*COACHING –
Philosophy – is something that you need to sit down and talk with your perspective coach and discuss!
*What type of coach is he?
*Is he an “at all cost” coach?
*What is his objective with this team?
*What are the team “rules” and “parent expectations” that he looks for?
These are just some
GUIDELINES items that are very important to think about when you are deciding to make the jump from Recreational Baseball to a more Competitive Level such as AA or AAA.
We certainly hope that this helps you and your player with the decisions that you are considering for your next step.
